<image:caption>The traditional way lawyers charge their time is by the hour. However, lawyers have begun to use flat fees in some cases. Flat fees like getting your car repaired - you know that replacing the timing belt will cost $1,000, no matter how much time the mechanic spends on the repair. We evaluate each case individually to see if an hourly or a flat fee arrangement makes sense.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Amelia E. Power - AMELIA E. POWER</image:title>
<image:caption>Amelia uses her legal training to care for clients at every step of their case. A former Arapahoe public defender, Amelia’s private practice focuses on a holistic and strategic defense. Whether defending the first amendment rights of protestors, guiding a person through their first DUI, or standing next to a juvenile accused of a serious crime, Amelia understands the stakes of a criminal case and what can be done to achieve the best outcome possible. In March 2020, Amelia began Power Law. Power Law’s goal is to provide high quality legal representation with a comforting touch. Power Law has worked to make representation affordable since its inception - a great defense should not be contingent on how much money you have. Amelia wants every Power Law client to feel valued and listened to as they go through the criminal justice process. Amelia began her legal career in high school and worked as a paralegal in large Denver law firms for several years before beginning DU Law School. She spent two years as a Student Attorney in the Criminal Defense Clinic, learning to strategically litigate cases through hands-on experience with real clients. Amelia also shared her enthusiasm with other students, working as an Academic Achievement Student Leader in Criminal Law. In 2015, Amelia graduated in the top 15% of her class and received the award for Outstanding Criminal Defense Clinic Student upon graduation. After graduation, Amelia started at the Arapahoe County trial office of the Colorado State Public Defender. During her years as a Deputy Public Defender, Amelia handled thousands of traffic, misdemeanor, and felony cases. Practicing in both adult court and juvenile court, Amelia learned the importance of uncovering each client’s unique story. Through careful negotiation, extensive mitigation, and strong litigation – including many jury trials – Amelia worked diligently to meet each client’s goals in both misdemeanor and felony cases. After leaving the public defender's office, Amelia worked as a Senior Associate for a boutique criminal defense firm specializing in cases with a mental health component. Amelia argued bond, prepared mitigation, litigated issues related to competency, presented mental health defenses, and worked with experts in this area. In 2019, Amelia extensively litigated and won several dismissals for clients suffering from mental health issues utilizing recently enacted legislation. Amelia is married to her wonderful husband, Drew, and has two amazing children. <image:title>Holistic Criminal Defense - WHAT IS HOLISTIC CRIMINAL DEFENSE?</image:title>
<image:caption>A holistic approach to criminal defense involves considering all aspects of a case and the individual accused of the crime, rather than focusing solely on the specific charges. This approach can lead to more effective and just outcomes for the accused and can also address the underlying issues. One of the key benefits of a holistic approach to criminal defense is that it can address the root causes of criminal behavior. Often, individuals who become involved in the criminal justice system have underlying issues such as substance abuse, mental health concerns, or a history of trauma that may have contributed to their criminal behavior. A holistic approach recognizes these underlying issues and works to address them as part of the defense strategy. For example, rather than simply defending against the specific charges, a holistic approach might involve seeking treatment for substance abuse or connecting the accused with mental health resources to address underlying issues. We work with a range of professionals - from social workers, therapists, experts, evaluators, and treatment providers, to be sure that a person’s specific needs and background are thoughtfully and strategically identified. Another advantage of a holistic approach is that it can lead to more just outcomes. By considering the individual circumstances and background of the accused, a holistic approach can take into account any extenuating circumstances or factors that may have contributed to the unlawful conduct. This can lead to more personalized and fair resolutions, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. In our experience, District Attorneys are open to mitigation if it is substantial, creative, and well-prepared. In addition to helping with the criminal case, holistic criminal defense can also help to reduce recidivism and promote more positive long-term outcomes for individuals involved in the criminal justice system.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Pamela J. Carty - PAMELA J. CARTY</image:title>
<image:caption>Pamela is a fierce advocate dedicated to the compassionate representation of people accused of crimes. Pamela uses her excellent legal training, her background as a substance use counselor, and her strong relationships with all parties to get the best results for clients. Pamela grew up in the small village of Euxton, in the North West of England. While visiting the United States, she met her future husband, and eventually moved to Arizona. Her husband, Sam, is a former United States Air Force Officer, which gives Pamela unique knowledge into how criminal charges can affect those in the military.. After graduating from the University of Arizona with a Psychology degree, Pamela began working at the La Frontera Center in Tucson. As an adult recovery facilitator, Pamela worked one-on-one with individual clients to develop treatment plans to address serious mental illness and also supervised a team of treatment providers. In 2010, Pamela and Sam moved to Colorado, where Pamela continued her work with Arapahoe House. There, as a clinical case manager, Pamela designed treatment programs and worked with clients facing substance abuse, as well as mental health, issues. These experiences gave Pamela a deep understanding of the serious issues that homelessness, addiction, untreated mental illness, and poverty can cause in a person’s life, including how these issues intersect with the criminal justice system. Pamela decided to use this understanding to go to law school and help bring the perspective of a treatment provider into the courtroom. Pamela graduated from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 2016. Throughout law school, Pamela interned with the Colorado State Public Defender and knew that criminal defense work was her calling.. Pamela began her work as a Deputy Public Defender in 2016 in the Arapahoe Trial Office. There, Pamela handled thousands of misdemeanor and felony cases, and took dozens of cases to trial. Pamela fostered healthy working relationships with the bench and the prosecutors and frequently achieved exceptional outcomes for her clients. Pamela used her background to help clients not only achieve their goal in their criminal case, but to design creative programs to help them beyond the courtroom. Pamela also practiced in the Adams County Trial Office from 2020-2021. In 2021, Pamela decided to join Power & Carty Defense as a partner to continue her passion for criminal defense work in a different context. Pamela is committed to continuing to work for indigent clients and to providing affordable legal services, while also continuing to represent the whole client and to address each person’s specific and important goals. Education University of Denver, Sturm College of Law, JD 2016 University of Arizona at Tucson, BA 2008 Bar Admissions Colorado</image:caption>
